The Pakistan Cricket Board has banned Sri Lanka T20 captain Dasun Shanaka from the Pakistan Super League (PSL) for one year.
The PCB said the decision was taken due to his “unilateral withdrawal” during the 11th PSL season.
The PCB has announced its final decision on Shanaka’s future participation in the PSL after a thorough review of the contractual status with Lahore Qalandars.
According to the PCB, Shanaka’s unilateral withdrawal from the tournament on March 21, 2026, was a breach of the Player Registration Rules and the Tripartite Agreement. It also stated that the withdrawal was not for reasons accepted within the framework of the agreement.
While the PCB has considered Shanaka’s expressed regret and desire to play for Pakistan, the PCB said that due to the seriousness of the breach, legal action is required.
Accordingly, Shanaka has been completely banned from participating in the 2027 PSL.
Shanaka said in a statement,
“I deeply regret my decision to withdraw from the PSL. I express my sincere apologies to the people of Pakistan, PSL fans and the entire cricket community.
PSL is a prestigious tournament. I fully understand the inconvenience caused by my actions. I especially apologize to the Lahore Qalandars fans.
At the time of leaving the PSL, I had no intention of joining any other tournament. I have great respect for the Pakistani fans. I look forward to returning to the PSL in the future,” it said.
The PCB further stressed that upholding professional standards and obligations in player contracts is essential for the long-term success of the PSL.
