Sri Lanka allrounder Wanindu Hasaranga has been ruled out of the remainder of the 2026 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup after suffering a serious hamstring injury during Sri Lanka’s opening match against Ireland in Colombo.

Although Hasaranga completed his four-over spell, claiming 3 for 25 to help Sri Lanka defend 164, an MRI scan conducted on Monday revealed a significant tear in his left hamstring. The scan was reviewed by a specialist in the UK before he was officially ruled out on Tuesday.

The injury is understood to be linked to a previous hamstring issue, adding to Hasaranga’s recent injury struggles, which have also included a foot problem. His absence is a major setback for Sri Lanka, as he is their most accomplished T20 bowler, having taken 40 wickets at T20 World Cups at an economy rate of 6.01.

The ICC is yet to approve a replacement, but leg-spin allrounder Dushan Hemantha is expected to be named as Hasaranga’s replacement. Sri Lanka are likely to face Oman on February 12, Australia on February 16, and Zimbabwe on February 19 in their remaining group matches.
