Sri Lanka Cricket and head coach Sanath Jayasuriya have reportedly asked fast bowler Lasith Malinga to provide a short-term stint with the national team so that he can be part of the support staff for the ICC Men's T20 World Cup.
As part of Sri Lanka's World Cup preparations, Malinga was appointed as the consultant fast bowling coach on a one-month contract from 15 December 2025 to 25 January 2026. His current tenure is set to end on 25 January, and a final decision on an extension has not yet been announced.
Even before joining the coaching post, Malinga has been assisting the team in their preparations remotely, and Sri Lanka's think tank is reportedly keen to retain his services. Sri Lanka Cricket is also understood to be keen on an extension.
Malinga is considered a key tactical figure in Twenty20 cricket, guiding bowlers and having extensive experience in franchise leagues such as the Indian Premier League. He is widely known for his commentary on death bowling, match-ups and modern T20 strategies.
The ICC Men's T20 World Cup, co-hosted by Sri Lanka and India, will begin on 7 February 2026.
