Harry Brook rewrote the record books with a stunning 202 off 114 balls against Sri Lanka in Rawalpindi. However, his historic double century was not enough to prevent England from suffering a two-wicket defeat as Sri Lanka successfully chased down a mammoth target of 430, recording the second-highest successful chase in ODI history.
The match produced a combined total of 859 runs, the second-highest aggregate in ODI cricket.
Brook’s Record-Breaking Double Century
1. England’s first ODI double century
Brook became the first England batter to score a double century in men’s ODI cricket. His 202 surpassed Ben Stokes’ previous England record of 182, scored against New Zealand at The Oval in 2023.
2. Fastest ODI double century
Brook reached his double century in just 114 balls, setting a new record for the fastest double hundred in ODI cricket. Shubman Gill had previously held the record with a 117-ball double century against West Indies last month.
3. Highest ODI score in Pakistan
Brook’s 202 became the highest individual ODI score recorded in Pakistan, surpassing Gary Kirsten’s unbeaten 188 against the United Arab Emirates during the 1996 World Cup. Kirsten, now Sri Lanka’s head coach, was present in Rawalpindi to witness his record being broken 30 years later.
4. Highest ODI score by a non-opening batter
Brook’s innings became the highest individual score by a non-opener in ODI cricket, surpassing Glenn Maxwell’s unbeaten 201 against Afghanistan in the 2023 World Cup. It also eclipsed the previous highest score by a No. 4 batter, Viv Richards’ unbeaten 189 against England in 1984.
5. Fourth captain to score an ODI double century
Brook became the fourth captain to score a double century in men’s ODIs, joining Virender Sehwag, Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill. He also surpassed Andrew Strauss’ previous record for the highest ODI score by an England captain, 158 against India in the 2011 World Cup.
More Remarkable Numbers
429 for 4: England’s total was the first 400-plus ODI innings recorded in Pakistan, surpassing the previous record of 375 for 3 by Pakistan against Zimbabwe in Lahore in 2015.
174 runs against fast bowlers: Brook scored 174 runs off just 90 balls against pace bowlers during his double century, the highest such score in ODI cricket where ball-by-ball data is available. Rohit Sharma previously held the record with 166 during his 264 against Sri Lanka in 2014.
174 runs after the 25th over: Brook scored 174 runs in the final 25 overs of England’s innings. Only Rohit Sharma, with 204, and Heinrich Klaasen, with 174, have matched or exceeded that figure in the same phase of an ODI innings.
14.41 runs per over: Brook and Will Jacks scored 185 runs from 77 balls for the fourth wicket, producing a run rate of 14.41 per over. It was the fourth-highest run rate for an ODI partnership worth at least 150 runs and the highest for England.
Sri Lanka’s Historic Run Chase
430-run target: Sri Lanka’s successful chase of 430 became the second-highest in ODI history, behind South Africa’s famous 438-run chase against Australia in Johannesburg in 2006.
Second-highest successful List A chase: Sri Lanka’s achievement also ranked as the second-highest successful run chase in List A cricket. Four of the five successful chases of targets exceeding 400 in List A cricket have occurred since December 2025.
261 runs required in the final 25 overs: Sri Lanka were 169 for 2 after 25 overs, still needing 261 runs to win. This became the highest total successfully chased in the final 25 overs of an ODI innings, surpassing Ireland’s 215-run chase against England at the 2011 World Cup.
Additional Records from the Match
103 runs conceded by Sam Curran: Curran recorded the most expensive bowling figures by an England bowler in men’s ODI cricket, conceding 103 runs in nine overs. His previous unwanted record was 98 runs against West Indies in 2023.
Eight fifty-plus scores: Eight batters scored at least 50 runs in the match, equalling the record for the most fifty-plus individual scores in an ODI.
Brook’s double century in a losing cause: Brook became the first batter to score an ODI double century and finish on the losing side. The previous highest individual ODI score in a defeat was Charles Coventry’s unbeaten 194 against Bangladesh in 2009.
The extraordinary contest will be remembered both for Brook’s historic batting display and Sri Lanka’s remarkable ability to chase down 430 runs under immense pressure.
